“Future of Creation” Course Chair David Rhoads Featured in Sojourners
Magazine
FUTURE
OF CREATION COURSE SCHEDULE
An
article in the September/October issue of Sojourners Magazine
praises New Testament professor David Rhoads of the Lutheran School
of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) for his “indefatigable leadership”
in incorporating environmental stewardship and creation care into
the education of seminarians. In an article that questions, “Will
seminaries equip church leaders for an age of environmental crisis?”
author Katharine M. Preston holds up Dr. Rhoads' work as a model
of what should be. Rhoads has led LSTC to incorporate environmental
stewardship into all levels of the curriculum. He has also reached
out to congregational communities and other seminaries through his
efforts as director of the Web of Creation project, which makes
stewardship resources available through the Internet at www.webofcreation.org.
This spring, Rhoads will concentrate his considerable talent and
energy for environmental education on the Zygon Center's new course
offering. He will co-chair “The Future of Creation: Foundations
for a Just and Sustainable World,” which will provide students with
scientific information about environmental degradation, biblical
and theological perspectives on creation care, and practical strategies
for congregational leadership. Zygon Center director Gayle Woloschak,
a professor and molecular biologist at Northwestern University,
will also co-chair the course. Like the Epic of Creation, the Future
of Creation lectures will be free and open to the public. The Future
of Creation will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30-9:30 p.m. (see
detailed schedule)
